What happened?

A 7.0 earthquake hit an area near Port-au-Prince, Haiti on January 12, 2010. Damage reports are still coming in, but it appears to be a major crisis. CNN is stating that a devastating 7.0 earthquake hit the capital city of Port-au-Prince Haiti about 5 PM EST Tuesday afternoon, with upwards of 24 additional aftershocks recorded throughout the evening with some aftershocks reaching 5.9 on the Richter scale. Many government buildings including the Presidential Palace have collapsed, trapping workers and leaving many people unaccounted for. Homes, hotels, hospitals and other buildings including U.N. installations have collapsed or sustained severe damage. Thousands are unaccounted for and are feared dead or trapped beneath the rubble.

Port-au-Prince has an estimated population of 2-3 million people. Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere, with 80% of the population living below the poverty line and 50% of the population living in abject poverty.

Here are some ways you can help victims in the region:

We have a need for people that have a medical or construction background that would be interested in going to Haiti to help minister to those affected by the devastation there. There is a trip through the Evangelical Free Church of America that will last from March 6-12, but as this is a fast approaching date they will need to know as soon as possible if we have people that can go. If you are interested you can visit the missions counter in the Lobby after the Sunday service for information, or contact Scott Crawford.

EFCA TouchGlobal Crisis Response is coordinating a response in connection with the EFCA Southeast District, an EFCA church planter in Haiti, and key ministry partners, and are accepting online donations.

Samaritan's Purse's has been active in helping earthquake victims since the beginning of the crisis and are uniquely equipped to help with both physical and spiritual needs. They are accepting online donations.

Agape Flights has made 54 flights, delivered 120,000 pounds of emergency supplies, and transported 24 medical personnel to Haiti since the earthquake.

You can also donate $10 to the Red Cross by texting "Haiti" to the number 90999.

Those who are interested in being involved at some point in the future with trips to assist Haiti should contact Scott Crawford.
